Archie Waters — Chess Prodigy's Mentor
El Paso, Texas — Archie Waters, an El Paso Times Columnist who was a mentor to chess prodigy Bobby Fischer, died Monday after a stroke a month ago. Mr. Waters was 83.
Mr. Waters, who was the first black member of the prestigious Marshall Chess Club of New York, befriended a teenage Fischer in Brooklyn in the 1950s and accompanied the chess genius to Iceland during his landmark world title match against Russian Boris Spassky in 1972.
